5.3 Equipment

Overview

Weapons and gear are a core pillar of our game’s experience, providing players with realistic, impactful, and highly customizable tools to approach each mission in their own way. Our philosophy is grounded futurism—modern weaponry with a practical, near-future twist, avoiding both overused classics and outlandish sci-fi aesthetics. Every weapon must feel powerful, sound incredible, and offer meaningful customization.

Below is a breakdown of how we approach equipment art.

Our equipment art must do three things:

1. Increase Immersion

Our arsenal doesn’t consist of generic, real-world guns seen in every shooter, nor does it lean into sci-fi designs with digital ammo counters and neon-lit attachments. Instead, our approach is tactical, practical, and forward-thinking—weapons feel like they belong in a military contractor’s arsenal in 2035, designed for function over form.

Key Features:

  • Near-Future Weaponry: Guns take inspiration from next-generation military and law enforcement prototypes, blending familiar operating principles with minor futuristic enhancements like lighter composite materials, new suppressors.
  • No Over-Stylized Sci-Fi Aesthetics: Weapons look real, functional, and practical—no floating holographic scopes, glowing parts, or unnecessary digital clutter.
  • Unique Yet Recognizable Designs: Instead of reusing an M4, Glock, or AK variant, we introduce firearms that feel like logical successors to today’s weapons, incorporating next-gen firearm trends like integrated suppressors, bullpup reconfigurations, and adaptive optics. There can some experimental attachments.

Design Goals:
Weapons should feel like they exist in the real world, designed for professional operatives rather than space marines. The arsenal should make players feel like a highly trained operative using the best tools available, without venturing into sci-fi absurdity.

2. Intensify Combat

Weapons must not only look and sound powerful but also feel powerful through high-quality visual and audio feedback. Inspired by Ready or Not, Escape from Tarkov, and Insurgency: Sandstorm, our gunplay emphasizes realistic ballistics and weighty recoil.

Key Features:

  • Realistic Muzzle Flashes & Gunsmoke: Muzzle flash variations, heat distortion, and ejecting casings, with weapons leaving a lingering smoke.
  • Deep, Punchy Gun Sounds: Each weapon is recorded and designed with accurate indoor vs. outdoor acoustics, suppressed vs. unsuppressed fire.
  • Environmental Interaction: Bullets penetrate surfaces, leave visible impact marks, and create ricochets, forcing players to think tactically about cover.

Design Goals:
Every trigger pull should feel visceral—not just visually impressive, but also tactile and satisfying. The weight, recoil, and responsiveness of each gun should make players respect their firepower and use it carefully.

3. Enhance Stealth

Stealth in Darkspy isn’t just about movement—it’s about having the right tools for infiltration, deception, and silent takedowns. Our stealth gadget design prioritizes functionality, realism, and tactical depth, giving players the ability to manipulate light, sound, and enemy behavior to remain undetected.

Key Features:

  • Disrupt & Disable – EMP devices shut down cameras, turrets, and security doors. Signal jammers block enemy comms to delay reinforcements, while fiber optic cameras let players peek under doors before breaching.
  • Silent Infiltration Tools – Sound suppressors attach to weapons and gadgets, while lockpicks, code breakers, and hacking devices bypass security systems without triggering alarms. Tactical foam silences footsteps on loud surfaces, and climbing gear allows for alternative vertical routes.
  • Diversion & Misdirection – Throwable noise-makers draw guards away, smoke grenades break line of sight, and holographic decoys create false targets.

Design Goals:
Stealth gadgets should feel practical, realistic, and rewarding, giving players multiple ways to manipulate the environment. Whether infiltrating undetected or engineering controlled chaos, every tool should feel like something an elite operative would carry.

Final Thoughts

Our equipment philosophy is rooted in realism, impact, and versatility. Every weapon feels powerful and tactile, every customization has a meaningful purpose, and every piece of gear fits into a larger tactical ecosystem rather than being filler content. By curating a distinct yet diverse arsenal, we ensure that players have the right tools for the job, while still needing to think critically about their loadout.

Obviously we're not making a cartoon. This is also way too futuristic and sci-fi for us. But the idea: look huge this place is (with towers of holding cells with prisoners).
